The Power of Volunteering: A Grade 12 Student Gives Back

January, 2025

In today’s fast-paced world, it can be easy to overlook the incredible impact that volunteers have on youth sports and local communities. However, for one remarkable individual, volunteering has been a lifelong commitment—shaped by her experiences both as an athlete and as a mentor. Meet Aly Richer.  a dedicated member of the Nepean Girls Hockey Association (NGHA), whose passion for giving back extends far beyond the rink.

Aly has been playing for the Nepean Wildcats for 12 years as both a player and, eventually, as a goalie. She's been involved part-time and full-time in the goalie position, but over the last two years, her role has expanded into coaching. Aly gas been mentoring goalies for the U9 age group and was a goalie coach for one of the teams this year.

Her passion for volunteering runs deep, shaped by her own childhood experiences. "I’ve spent my whole life involved with volunteer organizations—initially as a member of Girl Guide units, softball and ice hockey teams, where wonderful volunteers guided us. I also saw my parents commit their free time to coaching and guiding me. This kind of support had a big influence on me."

Her words reveal a deep-rooted desire to carry on the legacy of mentorship that was so influential in her own life. Volunteering isn’t just an act—it’s part of who she is.

The joy of volunteering is something she has experienced firsthand. "When I volunteer, I always have fun. Yes, it can get busy and stressful, but the impact you have and the fun you experience makes it completely worth it. I volunteer because I enjoy it. And when I see a lack of support, I want to do everything I can to help and make a difference. Every person is capable of making a difference."

Despite her busy schedule, she still finds time for the activities that bring her joy. "I’m a grade 12 student at St. Francis Xavier High School," she says. "I’m hoping to attend nursing school next year, but in the meantime, I juggle two jobs—one working first aid at the National Arts Centre, and another providing after-school care for a local family. I also volunteer, mostly doing first aid at events in Ottawa, and of course, I coach goalies!"

Aly's message is clear: volunteering isn’t just for parents or adults—it’s for anyone who has the desire to make a difference. Whether you’re helping on the ice or supporting at events, there’s always a way to get involved and have a positive impact.
