FUNdamentals

About

If your daughter wants to play hockey, the NGHA FUNdamentals program is the place for her!

Our FUNdamentals (U7) program is a structured learn-to-play hockey program for girls aged 4 to 6. Our program is designed to help introduce young players to the fundamental skills of hockey while having FUN. Through skating warm-ups, skill-specific stations and games, girls will have the opportunity to develop these skills in a safe and nurturing environment. As well, they will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of teamwork, fair play and cooperation by interacting and playing with teammates.

Players will be sorted into two groups based on age and on hockey/skating experience.

Schedule

Our FUNdamental program runs from the last weekend of September to the first weekend of March. We have weekly practices scheduled on Saturday afternoon. Our practices focus primarily on basic skill development.

Beginning in December, a second weekly ice time is added on Sundays. Players will get the opportunity to participate in an adapted “mini” hockey game.

There is no ice scheduled over the Christmas holidays.

Fees

The registration fee is $299 for the season. Players will also be required to purchase their own equipment. We do, however, provide a pair of hockey socks and a Tim Hortons jersey. Jerseys and socks are handed out at a parents meeting in mid-September. Those that cannot attend the meeting will get their socks and jersey at the first practice.

For information on the mandatory required equipment, please read our NGHA Equipment Policy

Meet your co-coaches

Our FUNdamentals program uses a non-parent, all female staff. We think it's a great opportunity for our FUN players to not only have role models on the ice with them, but also to develop young coaches from within our association. We are very grateful to the NGHA U15 and U18 young women who volunteer their time as on-ice helpers.

Mackenzie Erbach

MacKenzie has been with the FUNdamentals program as an assistant coach for the past 9 years. She has also been playing hockey with NGHA since 2004, when she started in the FUNdamentals program. MacKenzie recently graduated from the University of Ottawa with a business degree. She may have more FUN experience, but she is the younger sister!

Sierra Erbach

Sierra has been an assistant coach with the FUN program for the past 7 years. She was also an on-ice helper for a Novice House League team for two years. Like MacKenzie, she started in the FUNdamentals program when she was four, so she has been with NGHA since 2002. Sierra is a teacher in the Ottawa public board.
